The top national Kite event will also serve this year as a prelude to the last official test for European Olympic athletes on their way to the 2024 Paris Games.
From March 14 to 16, the Mar Menor will be the scene of the National Formula Kite and Kite Foil Championship, serving as a prelude to the European Championship. The best exponents of kite at national and international level will meet in Los Alcázares during these days.

The competition, organized by the Mar Menor Nautical Club, the European Sailing Federation, the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) and Univela Sailing, will be carried out by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV), with the support of the institutions of the Region of Murcia. Although it is a national event, it is open to the participation of sailors from other countries.

This change of venue, decided by the RFEV, responds to the interest generated worldwide by the European Formula Kite Championship in the Region of Murcia. The S’Arenal Yacht Club kindly gave up the organisational rights of the Spanish Championship, thus contributing to the success of the event in the Mar Menor.

The competition will not be just another championship, but a meeting with the best national and international talents. For local competitors, it represents the first great opportunity of the year, while for foreigners, it is a crucial platform for preparation for the European Championship in the waters of the Mar Menor, just a few months before the Olympic Games in Paris. The participation of all Olympic athletes in Los Alcázares is expected, although not all of those competing in the Mar Menor will be present at the Olympic Games.

Even for participants from the same country, this event and the European Championship that follows will be decisive in establishing the name of the sailor from that country who will hold the place assigned to them for the Olympic Games, which is an added attraction to the competition.

This international level sporting event will elevate the Region of Murcia and Los Alcázares to the European forefront in the organisation of Olympic sailing events. The Spanish Championship, as a prelude to the European Championship, will allow the Organising Committee, led by the president of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, to evaluate the specific infrastructures installed on the beach of Las Salinas de Los Alcázares and fine-tune all the details for the event.

The anticipation among the participants is so high that some will arrive in the next few days to alternate training with days of rest along the coast of the lagoon. The Chinese delegation, one of the largest, is expected to arrive at the beginning of March after receiving the invitations for visas.

For its part, the European Sailing Federation, sensitive to the marine environment, will undertake a series of actions aimed at cleaning the environment where the competition will be held, beach and sea, thus contributing to the sustainability of the ecosystem and care for the environment of the Mar Menor.

Now adding both events, the Spanish Championship and the European Championship, the economic impact for the Murcia region is expected to be even greater, easily exceeding the 6,000 overnight stays initially estimated by the organisation.
